"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by British political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who later became his wife. At the time, the couple were lovers, although MacColl was still married to Joan Littlewood. Seeger sang the song when the duo performed in folk clubs around Britain. During the 1960s, it was recorded by various folk singers and became a major international hit for Roberta Flack in 1972, winning Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Billboard ranked it as the no. 1 Hot 100 single of the year for 1972.

미국 노스캐롤라이나 출신 재즈 팝 스탠더드의 여왕. 편안한 스탠더드에다 고급스러운 재즈 감성을 가미한 낭만적인 발라드를 불러 많은 사랑을 받은 가수, 대학 졸업 후 잠시 교사를 한 그녀는 명 프로듀서 조엘 돈(Joel Dorn)의 협력으로 1969년에 첫 앨범 [First Take]를 발표하면서 가수로 데뷔, 그의 히트곡 중 '"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" "Killing Me Softly With His Song"이 대표곡이다. Ewan MacColl의 오리지널을 재해석한 "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"는 1971년 재즈 마니아 클린트 이스트우드가 감독과 주연을 맡은 영화 "어둠 속에 벨이 울릴 때"의 OST로 히트하며 그녀의 대표곡이 되었다. 1973년에 발표된 "Killing Me Softly With His Song"은 원래 "American Pie", "Vincent"로 유명한 포크 가수 돈 맥클린(Don McLean)이 노래하는 모습에 감동한 작곡가 찰스 폭스(Charles Fox)와 노만 김벨(Norman Gimbel)이 만든 노래로, 로버타 플랙이 처음 들었을 때 자기 노래라고 확신했다는 일화가 전해진다. 흑인 민권 운동과 솔 음악으로 흑인의 자긍심이 최고조에 올랐던 1960년대 후반 데뷔한 로버타 플랙은 그러나 그런 것과는 상관없이 오직 사랑에 대해서만 노래해 그 때문에 더욱 백인들에게 환영을 받을 수 있었다.
