1786년, 쾌활한 성격의 엠마 하트(비비안 리 분)는 나폴리 주재 영국대사인 윌리엄 해밀턴 경(알란 모브레이 분)과 결혼한다. 7년 후 영국 해군의 영웅인 넬슨 경(로렌스 올리비에 분)이 왕에게 나폴레옹과의 전쟁 승인을 받기 위해 나폴리에 들르게 되고, 불행한 결혼 생활을 견뎌내고 있던 엠마는 넬슨 경에게서 탈출구를 찾으려 한다. 엠마와 넬슨은 걷잡을 수 없는 사랑의 불길 속에 휩싸여 영국으로 돌아오고, 넬슨의 부인이 이혼을 거부하는데도 불구하고 당당하게 동거에 들어간다. 넬슨이 전장에서 떠나있는 동안 영국의 전세는 급격히 기울어간다. 이에 엠마는 넬슨에게 지휘권을 되찾아 전쟁에 참가하도록 하고, 넬슨은 트라팔가로 떠난다. 마침내 넬슨은 트라팔가 해전에서 대승을 거두게 되지만 프랑스 저격병의 총탄에 맞아 죽게 되고, 그 소식을 들은 엠마는 절망에 빠져드는데.....

 

In 1786, Emma Hart (by Vivian Lee Bun) of a cheerful disposition married Sir William Hamilton (by Alan Mobray), British ambassador to Naples. Seven years later, Sir Nelson (Lorence Olivier), a British naval hero, stops in Naples to get the king's approval for war against Napoleon, and Emma, who was enduring an unhappy marriage, tries to find a way out of Lord Nelson. Emma and Nelson return to England in uncontrollable flames of love, and proudly cohabit in spite of Nelson's wife's refusal to divorce. While Nelson is away from the battlefield, the British war slips sharply. Emma takes Nelson back to command and lets him participate in the war, and Nelson leaves for Trafalgar. At last, Nelson wins the Battle of Trafalgar, but he's been shot dead by a French sniper, and Emma is in despair when she hears the news.
