- Honourable, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, the Chief Minister Sindh,
Honourable, Mir Mumtaz Hussain Jakhrani, the Minister of Transport Sindh,
- Mr. Shaheryar Chishty, CEO Daewoo Pakistan Express
- Mr. Chang In Park, President, Daewoo Pakistan Express
- Senior officials of the Government of Sindh,

And all Distinguished Guests,

ASSALAM-O-ALIKUM, & GOOD AFTERNOON,

It is indeed my pleasure to be present at this historic occasion of the launch of “Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Intercity Bus Project”. I congratulate the Government of Sindh and Daewoo Pakistan Express on launch of this landmark project, which aims to providing world-class transport facilities to the people of Sindh. I hope this project would prove another testimony of our growing business partnership.

I am especially satisfied with the fact that the bilateral ties between Korea and Pakistan have been gradually developed and expanded towards mutual benefits in every sector including transportation since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1983.

Especially, the construction of Lahore-Islamabad Motorway (M-2) by Daewoo Corporation in 1990s is considered a hallmark in our business relations. It has transformed Pakistan’s road transportation system from traditional mode to a value added services.

I am glad to note that, a subsidiary of the same company, Daewoo Pakistan Express sits here today as the operator of this landmark project. It will also transform the road transport sector in Sindh province, I am confident.

Dear Participants,
As a global phenomenon, effective transport system is integral to any country’s economic growth and prosperity. Well-planned road infrastructure with efficient transport system has played a very vital role in achieving the Korea’s today remarkable economic development.

In this backdrop, I can say, the launch of this project by the Sindh Government is a commendable initiative to achieving the economic prosperity for the province. Also, it is a step in the right direction to providing a comfortable and more secure luxury bus services to the people of Sindh.

Availing the opportunity, it is pertinent to mention here, the former President of Pakistan His Excellency Asif Ali Zardari visit to Korea in December 2012 & Honourable Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah visit to Korea in 2011 have played a key role in bring Korean business community to the province of Sindh.

Now Korean businessmen mark Sindh as priority destination for their investment & business, for example, prominent Korean companies such as; Lotte Chemical, Lotte Kolson, Hyundai Corporation and Ssangyong Engineering etc are stationed here in Sindh. And the more Korean companies are keen to work in Sindh infrastructure, energy, agriculture and urban development projects.

At the end, I would like to express my deep gratitude once again to all those who did a lot of efforts to make the today’s event possible especially the Governments of Sindh and Daewoo Express management. I sincerely hope “Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Intercity Bus Project” will be successful which certainly would strengthen our two friendly countries’ relations further.
Thank you and Shukria

Ambassador Remarks at Sahiwal Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SLCCI)
April 15, 2015

- Haji Sohail Anjum Ansari, President SLCCI
- Office Bearers of SLCCI and
- All other distinguished participants

ASSALAM-O-ALIKUM, and GOOD AFTERNOON,

It is my pleasure to visit Sahiwal which is famous for Livestock and agro-based processing industry. I am also delighted to know that the greater Indus civilization’s ancient city HARAPPA site is located in this city.

Mr. President, I thank you for your warm welcome at SLCCI by making wonderful arrangement on a short notice.

This is my first visit to this city and your esteemed Chamber. I am confident that our interaction today would be a new beginning in our objective of promoting our closer ties both at private & official levels.

Pakistan is an agro-based economy with world’s one of the largest irrigation systems and Korea is renowned in agro technology and expertise. I have firm belief, if Korean agriculture technology and Know-how is combined with Pakistan large agriculture land and human resource, it can assure food security and economic prosperity for our two countries.

Dear Businessmen,
As you know, Korea and Pakistan are not only good friends but also are two leading trade partners. However, for last two years this trade partnership after touching the two-way trade volume at 1.6 billion dollars in 2012 has dropped to 1.17 billion dollars in 2014, almost 27 percent declined in just two years.

This sharp decline is a matter of serious concern for all of us as at the time when the trade among the nations is increasing day by day and Korea trade with the world has been increased steadily to over 1.1 trillion dollars since 2012, then why Pakistan-Korea trade has downward trend.

The main possible reason of this decline is that there is no Pakistan-Korea FTA while Pakistan-China enjoy FTA that leads them to have a high level of trade with each other. Whereas the lack of proper understanding of each other’s markets and lack of frequent communication among our trade representative bodies could be another key reason of this decline.

Dear Businessmen,
It is general consensus that the existing level of our bilateral trade is far below the potential which we have or can have.

To materialize that potential at official level, KOREA & PAKISTAN have signed an MoU on “TRADE AND INVESTMENT COOPERATION” last year.

Also, both sides are initiating a civilian level joint study for exploring the possibility of bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA). I believe, the expected positive results of this research would pave the way to increase the present trade volume by many folds in the coming years.

Furthermore, in order to have more bilateral economic cooperation, Federal Minister for Commerce of Pakistan Mr. Khurram Dastgir Khan will be visiting Korea with a business delegation soon. I hope some businessmen from your chamber will be part of that visiting delegation.

The pro-business friendly policies of your present government are encouraging local and international businessmen to do their business freely and fairly in Pakistan.

If this attitude continues more Korean companies would like to do business here and explore business opportunities jointly with local partners.

In this circumstance, Sahiwal region could become a very attractive destination for foreign business community in the areas of corporate farming and agro-processing industry due to its fertilized land, availability of large workforce and less security issues in the region.

Dear Businessmen,
I am confident our today’s meeting will be fruitful to understand each other’s needs and formulating a way forward mechanism for enlarging the bilateral business relations.

Lastly, my Embassy in Islamabad, our official trade agency, Korea trade-investment promotion agency (KOTRA) office in Karachi are available round the clock to provide you every facility to promote our trade and business.

I personally always welcome meeting with the business leaders. So, please do not hesitate to approach me.

Thanks for your attention - Bohot Shukria
