Independence Day Greetings
By Dr. Song Jong-hwan
The author is the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Pakistan
As’salaam-o-Alaikum Pakistan! on behalf of the Korean government and the Korean people, I would like to greet all Pakistanis and convey my heartfelt wishes for peaceful and prosperous Pakistan on the auspicious celebration of Pakistan’s Independence Day.
Even though Korea and Pakistan are far away geographically, there are many similarities between our countries. We both give importance to hospitality and respect for elders. The Korean language and Urdu share the same sentence structure and many common words like “Abu-ji”, “Amma” and “Ammi”. Both our countries got independence at around the same time; Pakistan was born on 14th August 1947 while the Korean government was established on 15th August 1948.
Diplomatic relations between our countries were established in 1983. However, the relations between our people date back to the fourth century when Maranantha, a famous Buddhist monk, studied Buddhism in Taxila and then introduced Buddhism to Korea. He hailed from Chota Lahore in Swabi district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Another famous Korean monk, Heycho, visited this area in the 8th century. He wrote a travelogue named "Memoir of the Pilgrimage to the Five Kingdoms of the Subcontinent" which includes present day Kashmir, Gilgit and Peshawar.
During the Korean War from 1950 to 1953 Pakistan provided humanitarian assistance to Korea. So our association is historic and provides solid ground to build a strong and durable friendship for the future.
Korea built the iconic M2 Motorway between Islamabad and Lahore in the 1990s. Today, Korea is increasingly investing in Pakistan’s infrastructure and development projects. These include hydro-power projects which will provide much needed electricity to Pakistan, tunnels and roads which will help link Pakistan to Central Asia.
Korea has always stood by Pakistan like a true friend. Korea provided economic assistance for flood victims and IDPs. We also are planning to provide Pakistan with a 500 million dollar ‘Economic Development Cooperation Fund’ from 2015 to 2017.
Thanks to the visionary leaders and the hard work of the Korean people, Korea is a major economic power in the world. Korean per capita income in 1960 was less than $80. Now Korean per capita income is more than twenty-eight thousand dollars! Korea’s trade volume has been more than a trillion dollars since 2010. This is called the ‘Miracle of the Han River’.
It is my wish to see a similar ‘Miracle of the Indus River’ in Pakistan. God has given Pakistan the second highest mountain in the world as well as a deep sea like the Indian Ocean. Pakistan has a strategic location, abundant natural resources, population and land. Pakistan also has talented and skilled labor. All these reasons convince me Pakistan can achieve its own Miracle of the Indus River.
Pakistan-Korea Dosti Zindabad!

3. 4-H 운동 런칭 축하 연설문
Remarks by H.E. Dr. Song Jong (Aug 13, 2015) at Roots Millennium Campus with
Mr. David Kim for Launch of 4-H
As-salam-o-Alaikum!
Before starting my remarks I would like to give a short message to all my dear Pakistani friends and students:
Hum Aik Hein. Yome Azzadi Mubarak. I would like to wish all of you a very happy independence day.
Mr. Chaudhry Faisal Mushtaq, Chief Executive, Roots Millennium Schools,
Mr. David Ki-yong Kim, Chairman of AgRich Global Inc., and Chairman of Global Vision Inc.,
Respected faculty, and dear students,
First of all I would like to congratulate you on the launch of 4-H in Pakistan. Secondly, I would like to appreciate the pro-active approach of Mr. Faisal Mushtaq, who took only 9 months to introduce 4-H to Pakistan.
Before offering my congratulations on starting 4-H in Pakistan, I want to tell you about how I know Faisal. I first met Faisal on 15th October, 2013 at the wedding of his sister-in-law in Faisalabad. Since then we have had a great working relationship.
In June 2014, my friend, Mr. David Ki-yong Kim kindly invited 2 participants from Pakistan to attend a conference in order to introduce 4-H. I contacted Faisal and offered him the opportunity.
Faisal and his elegant wife visited Korea to attend the 1st Global 4-H Network Summit held in Seoul from 27th October to 2nd November. Within 9 months of attending this conference, he has introduced 4-H to Pakistan. I think this is a great achievement; and for this, I think he deserves a round of applause. (Clap Clap)
4-H stands for “Head, Heart, Hands, and Health”. These are the four values which members work on through engaging programs. 4-H Clubs started in Ohio, USA, in 1902 and are now in over 40 countries. The 4-H Project benefits the youth from 8 to 18 years by empowering them through cooperative partnerships with caring adults.
Seeds are tiny but they have the potential to become an entire forest. Seeds which are well nourished give great fruit in the future.
Similarly, initiating the 4-H program is just like a seed sown in Pakistan. I am sure this seed will become a forest, which will provide much needed resources to Pakistan. Therefore, the beginnings will seem humble but the future will be prosperous.
For this reason I strongly encourage and support this program.
I wish you all the best of luck for your future.
Thank you. Shukria!
